Usa news; Congress returns to another primetime showdown – this time over the rules package that governs how the House does its business.
The rules package, which typically receives little attention among the routine procedures of Congress, has been at the heart of negotiations between new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the cadre of right-wing members who delayed his election to the seat for four days. It is slated to be voted on Monday night.
Though McCarthy will hold the gavel and have arguably the best view in Washington from the speaker’s balcony, critics say he traded away the true power of the position in his dayslong bid for the seat.
It took 15 rounds of voting and multiple concessions for McCarthy to become speaker.
