Turkey on Sunday expressed its sorrow at the execution of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami central executive committee member Mir Quasem Ali.

In a press release issued by the Turkish foreign ministry, it said “the past wounds cannot be healed with these methods”.

“We have learned with sorrow that the death sentence issued by the International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh against Mir Quasem Ali has been executed in Bangladesh,” read the press release.

It further said, “We stress once again that the wounds of the past cannot be healed with these methods and hope that this wrong practice will not lead to separation among the brotherly people of Bangladesh.”

The country had also condemned the execution of Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami and withdrawn its ambassador from Dhaka. Pakistan, too, expressed its sadness over the Quasem execution, saying Quasem was executed for the “alleged crimes committed before December 1971” and termed the trial as a “flawed judicial process”.

Known as the financier of his party, 63-year-old Quasem was executed on Saturday night for committing crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971.
