Online Desk : Leaders of the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas-Mineral Resources and Power-Ports on Friday said the Sundarbans will be protected the same way the Phulbari movement resisted the open coal mining move in 2006, says UNB news agency.
This is not a development at all, which goes against people, society and environment as well as welcomes destruction, they said at a meeting in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.
The meeting was organised marking the 10th anniversary of the Phulbari Tragedy Day.
Chaired by committee convener Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah, the meeting was addressed, among others, by columnist Syed Abul Maksud, professor MM Akash, Ruhin Hossain Prince and Noor Mohammad.
The speakers alleged that local and international looters failed to gain their interests from Phulbari following a mass protest, but now they are trying to destroy the Sundarbans, a UNESCO world heritage site and the world’s largest mangrove forest.
Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL), a joint venture company formed by Dhaka and New Delhi, has signed a contract with Indian contractor BHEL to install Rampal Power Plant near the Sundarbans.
It has been alleged that the coal-based power plant will cause havoc to the Sundarbans.
