A case was filed against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, and son of a former BNP leader on Monday for allegedly threatening prime minister Sheikh Hasina through facebook, reports UNB news agency.
Ruling Awami League’s Chittagong (south) unit information and research affairs secretary Abdul Kadir Sujon filed the case with the court of Chittagong additional chief metropolitan magistrate ASM Shahidullah Kaiser, under section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
The other person accused in the case is Irad Ahmed Siddique, son of former BNP standing committee member Chowdhury Tanveer Ahmed Siddique, who posted his Facebook status on 25 September, saying, “It’s not possible to bring back democracy and balance of power in Bangladesh without assassinating Sheikh Hasina.”
Besides, those who liked and made comments on the facebook status were also made accused in the case. However, the number of the accused could not be known yet.
Petitioner Abdul Kadir Sujon said Irad Ahmed also made a derogatory comment about the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and published the post through his facebook status on 15 September.
Although Irad Ahmed is neither a member BNP’s national executive committee nor of any of its associate bodies, the petitioner Abdul Kadir Sujon claimed in his petition that Irad is a member of BNP’s national executive committee.
“As a member of the BNP’s national executive committee, Irad cannot post such a statement on his facebook wall alone…it might be a decision of the party. Its top two leaders must know the fact. I think Irad might have posted the statement after getting permission from them,” said the petitioner.
Earlier, Bedarul Alam Chowdhury Bedar, a leader of Awami League (north) unit filed a case against Irad with Kotwali police station on 28 September.
