Relations between the United States and Cuba were marked for decades by \u201cdiscord and profound political disagreements\u201d, Obama said in the statement, while also recalling the process begun in late 2014 to restore full diplomatic relations with America\u2019s Caribbean Cold War enemy.<\/p>\n

The goal of normalising ties (embassies were reopened last year) was to pursue \u201ca future in which the relationship between our two countries is defined not by our differences but by the many things that we share as neighbours and friends \u2014 bonds of family, culture, commerce, and common humanity\u201d, the President said.<\/p>\n

That engagement has included the contributions of Cuban Americans, \u201cwho have done so much for our country and who care deeply about their loved ones in Cuba\u201d. In March, Obama became the first sitting US President to visit Cuba in 88 years. During his stay on the island, he met with President Raul Castro \u2013 the revolutionary leader\u2019s younger brother, who has led the country for a decade \u2014 but not with Fidel.<\/p>\n

Obama issued a presidential policy directive in October aimed at making the US opening toward Cuba \u201cirreversible\u201d, although his successor in the White House \u2014 Republican Donald Trump, who will take office in January \u2014 pledged during the campaign to rollback the US-Cuban thaw until \u201cfreedoms are restored\u201d on the Communist-ruled island.<\/p>\n
