International Desk: An effigy of U.S. presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton has been built in England as part of the Bonfire night celebrations.

Every year, on November 5th, fireworks are let off across the UK to commemorate the attempt by Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

As part of those celebrations, the Edenbridge Bonfire Society in Kent, England, usually builds an 11-metre image of a well-known figure to burn down.

One of the artists behind the effigy, Frank Shepherd, said there was an obvious choice this year.

“There was more than one on the top of the list. The other one that was possible was Sir Philip Green but Donald Trump is obviously much easier to characterize. A well-known figure, lots of image around and caricatures in the press and on television. So, it was a fairly easy choice.”

Shepherd has taken part in building the Bonfire effigies for the last 22 years and this time around he was helped by local artist Andrea Deans.

The effigy shows Trump holding Clinton’s head. The Republican candidate is also seen wearing boxer shorts bearing the faces of men dressed in sombrero hats marked by Mexican flags – a reference to his pledge to build a wall along the U.S. border with its southern neighbour.

“Obviously the situation down there with his threatening to build a wall we needed something Mexican, so he’s got Mexican shorts,” said Deans.

Trump and Clinton join a long list of effigies of famous faces, including cyclist Lance Armstrong, FIFA President Sepp Blatter and footballer Wayne Rooney.

“I think he would be quietly amused,” said Green. “I know he doesn’t do a lot on the diplomacy front, but no I think he would laugh and make some suitable humorous comment about it.”

The structure is due to be burned down on Saturday, just days ahead of the U.S. election.
