International desk: China\u2019s foreign minister met Myanmar\u2019s junta chief in Naypyidaw on Tuesday, officials said, the highest-ranking Chinese official to meet the country\u2019s top general since a coup more than two years ago.<\/p>\n
Myanmar has been riven by violence since the putsch that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s government in February 2021.<\/p>\n
China is a major ally and arms supplier of the internationally isolated junta and has refused to condemn the military takeover.<\/p>\n
China \u2018stands with Myanmar on the international stage\u2019, foreign minister Qin Gang told junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, according to a Burmese-language statement from the junta\u2019s information team.<\/p>\n
\u2018China advocates that the international community should respect Myanmar\u2019s sovereignty and play a constructive role in helping it achieving peace and reconciliation,\u2019 Qin said, according to a later statement from the Chinese foreign ministry.<\/p>\n
Qin will remain in the country until Thursday, according to the junta.<\/p>\n
His predecessor, Wang Yi, visited Myanmar in July last year, meeting with his counterpart but not the junta chief.<\/p>\n
