The sudden outbreak of violence over the weekend between the nation\u2019s two top generals, each backed by tens of thousands of heavily armed fighters, trapped millions of people in their homes or wherever they could find shelter, with supplies running low in many areas.<\/p>\n
The power struggle pits General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of the armed forces, against General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The former allies jointly orchestrated an October 2021 military coup.<\/p>\n
The violence has raised the spectre of civil war just as Sudanese were trying to revive the drive for a democratic, civilian government after decades of military rule.<\/p>\n
Calls for truce<\/p>\n
On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres again called on Sudan\u2019s warring parties to \u201cimmediately cease hostilities\u201d. He warned that further escalation \u201ccould be devastating for the country and the region\u201d.<\/p>\n
The White House on Monday also called for an immediate ceasefire to fighting in Sudan, adding: \u201cWe deplore the escalating violence out of Khartoum and elsewhere in Sudan. We call for an immediate ceasefire without conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Al Jazeera\u2019s James Bays, reporting from the UN, said various international players are being relied on to broker a ceasefire.<\/p>\n
\u201c[The UN envoy to Sudan] believes pressure from others is important. The African Union, regional grouping IGAD, Arab League, all of these bodies are talking with various players and in particular with the two generals, trying to get a ceasefire in place,\u201d Bays said.<\/p>\n
