International Desk: A top Ukrainian official has criticised the \u201csymbolic blow\u201d of Russia assuming the rotating presidency of the United Nations security council.<\/p>\n
Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president\u2019s chief of staff, wrote on Twitter on Saturday: \u201cIt\u2019s not just a shame. It is another symbolic blow to the rules-based system of international relations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Russia on Saturday took over the presidency of the UN\u2019s top security body, which rotates every month.<\/p>\n
The last time Moscow held the post was in February 2022, when its troops launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n
On Friday the Kremlin said it planned to \u201cexercise all its rights\u201d in the role.<\/p>\n
The US has urged Russia to \u201cconduct itself professionally\u201d when it assumes the role, saying there is no means to block Moscow from the post.<\/p>\n
Yermak also hit out at Iran, whom Kyiv and its allies accuse of supplying Russia with arms, including hundreds of assault drones that have menaced Ukrainian infrastructure facilities. Tehran denies supplying Russia with weapons.<\/p>\n
Referring to Iran\u2019s Islamic Republic Day holiday, Yermak said: \u201cIt is very telling that on the holiday of one terror state \u2013 Iran, another terror state \u2013 Russia \u2013 begins to preside over the UN security council.\u201d<\/p>\n
