While the number of working women was 16.2 lakh in 2010, it increased to 18.6 lakh in 2016-17.

In 1974, women’s participation in the labor market was only 4 percent. In 2016, it increased to 35.6 percent. This is higher than the increase in the rate of male labor in the labor market.

According to the Bureau of Statistics’ Labor Force Survey, one of the significant changes in the labor market in recent years is the significant participation of women in the labor market. On the positive side, the participation rate of rural women in the labor market is higher than that of urban women. Apart from the garment sector, women’s participation in hotels, restaurants, communications, real estate services, telecommunications, banking and insurance is also on the rise.

According to a survey conducted by the Asian Center for Development (ACD), out of a total of 42 lakh 20 thousand garment workers in the country, 24 lakh 98 thousand are women. After the garment sector, Bangladeshi women migrant workers have played an important role in turning the wheel of the country’s economy. According to the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training, from 1991 to February 2021, a total of 9,35,466 women went abroad to work. Despite being subjected to various forms of torture, these women go to work in different countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar and Oman every year.

This advancement of women is playing a major role in the transformation of Bangladesh from a low-income country to a middle-income country. According to them, the big philosophy of the government politically is to give opportunities to women in various fields of work, especially in government jobs. Many high-ranking government officials, including secretaries and senior secretaries, are now women.

The participation of women in high-ranking positions in law enforcement agencies such as police, army and navy is also seen. That is, opportunities are now being created for women to participate in equal workplaces. If the government maintains this political status and forces the private sector to make policy decisions on gender equality, then women’s participation in equal work will be seen equally. Over the past decade, Bangladesh has become a global role model for women’s empowerment. Due to the economic development of women, Bangladesh is becoming increasingly economically self-sufficient.

News Desk: According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the number of working women in Bangladesh is increasing.
