The government has increased the price of bottled soybean oil by Tk 33 per liter in four phases of four months. Consumers will now have to buy a liter of bottled soybean oil at Tk 153 to increase the price by Tk 12 per liter. And to buy open soybean oil you have to pay 129 rupees per liter.<\/p>\n<p>The price will be effective from Friday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ministry of Commerce, the price of the product is now quite high in the international market. The Commerce Ministry had proposed to reduce VAT and normalize prices. But it was not possible as the National Board of Revenue (NBR) gave priority to revenue collection.<\/p>\n<p>A senior Commerce Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday night that \u201cprices have risen by 160 percent in the international market.\u201d But so far we have increased the price by only 35 percent. Now if we do not adjust the price, the importers may not open LC (import credit). Then there will be more big problems. So we review the whole thing in the context of importers\u2019 pleas to increase prices. Since then, the price of the product has been changed.<\/p>\n<p>Talking to Commerce Ministry officials and importers, it was learned that on May 19, the Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vegetable Manufacturers Association, an organization of importers, proposed to increase the price of edible oil by Tk 15 as official and Tk 13 as importers.
