Eighty-two percent of those who lost their jobs were unemployed for at least one month. Although these unemployed labor forces later entered the labor market, their incomes declined significantly.

This information has come up as a result of the food survey on income and employment situation in Kovidkala. The study was conducted by the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) with the support of Oxfam in Bangladesh. The survey was conducted directly on 2,600 families in January and February. The CPD organized a dialogue entitled “Income and Employment Situation in Covid’s Time: How Do People Survive?”

Highlighting the keynote address, CPD senior researcher Taufiqul Islam Khan said, ‘Forty-five percent of households surveyed said that their income has now declined by an average of 12 per cent compared to the previous period in Corona. The biggest decline was in the agricultural sector, about 16 percent.

Due to the decline in income, 52% of the families have reduced their food consumption and saved their expenses. Half the family is borrowing. According to the survey, the per capita debt has doubled. Eight-six percent of households said they were not earning enough to meet their daily needs. Twenty percent of the households surveyed received government incentives.

Only 23 percent of those who lost their jobs received assistance. According to the survey, 5 percent of households have been forced to sell their assets as a result of the corona. The study said that as people’s incomes have decreased, they have reduced food costs. Expenditure on health and education has also declined. As a result, the achievement of at least five goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is being hampered.

Professor Rehman Sobhan said, ‘The lockdown is not being implemented because it does not have the capacity to implement it. Considering the impact of employment and income, there is a need to increase cash assistance to the people. The government’s policy support needs to be increased. Devapriya Bhattacharya said, ‘Coroner’s influence has created a new poor group in the country. Suddenly, many lower middle class people have become poor.

News Desk: After the outbreak of corona in the country last year, 62 percent of the workforce was unemployed.
