Targeting Facebook\u2019s business model, US president Donald Trump\u2019s former chief strategist and former vice president of Cambridge Analytica Steve Bannon has accused the social network giant of selling people\u2019s data.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a conference held by the Financial Times newspaper on Thursday, Bannon, however, said that he did not know about the political data analytics firm\u2019s data mining from Facebook, CNBC reported.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey take your stuff for free. They sell it and monetise it for huge margins. That\u2019s why the companies trade for such high valuations,\u201d Bannon was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen they write algorithms and control your life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Cambridge Analytica, which worked with Trump\u2019s election team, was accused of harvesting millions of Facebook profiles of US voters.<\/p>\n
The firm has allegedly been using Facebook users\u2019 data to unfairly influence election results by psychological manipulation, entrapment techniques and fake news campaigns.<\/p>\n
According to a report in the Guardian, Bannon later said outside the conference room that he \u201cdid not remember\u201d being part of any scheme to buy data that came from Facebook and divert it to use for election propaganda.<\/p>\n
He claimed that neither he nor Cambridge Analytica had anything to do with \u201cdirty tricks\u201d in the use of information harvested from Facebook to make computer models to sway elections.<\/p>\n
He blamed any \u201cdirty tricks\u201d on Cambridge Analytica\u2019s parent company, Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL).<\/p>\n
\u201cFacebook data is for sale all over the world,\u201d Bannon told the Guardian.<\/p>\n
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday admitted that the social media giant \u201cmade mistakes\u201d over the scandal and a \u201cbreach of trust\u201d had occurred between it and its users.<\/p>\n
