US Special Envoy John Kerry’s visit to Dhaka

News Desk: US President Joe Biden’s Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry has arrived in Dhaka. Kerry landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a special flight at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

An official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed this information. He said John Kerry had reached Dhaka via New Delhi, India. John Kerry’s visit to Dhaka is mainly to invite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate on April 22-23.

John Kerry, who arrived in Dhaka just a few hours after the coronavirus situation, will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the afternoon and deliver the invitation. Earlier, Biden’s special envoy will hold a meeting with Foreign Minister Abdul Momen at the state guest house Padma.

Regarding the visit of this important politician of Biden administration, the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs say that Washington wants Dhaka by its side in tackling climate change. Dhaka is also interested in working with Washington on this issue. At the moment, the main goal of John Kerry’s visit is to physically invite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate on April 22-23. However, on this occasion, Dhaka will raise issues like increasing US investment in Bangladesh, Rohingya issue, getting GSP facility or returning Rashed Chowdhury, the fugitive killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the United States.

On the other hand, diplomatic sources say that Washington wants Dhaka by its side in the Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS). In the run-up to the climate conference invitation, former Secretary of State Kerry will also remind the IPS that Sheikh Hasina wants the government to side with her. At the same time, the issue of dragging Dhaka aside for a long time will also be raised on defense related issues.

Asked about the reason for John Kerry’s visit, Secretary of State. AK Abdul Momen said, ‘He is coming for the climate. Invite our Prime Minister to the Summit, we will join. As the chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), we represent the 48 countries at risk of climate change. John Kerry will come and talk to us. This is an opportunity for us. What issues we will raise at the conference can be discussed with him. We must raise the issue of Rohingya. The good news is, when I visited the United States, I raised the issue of GSP with-draw, and I will do it again. ‘

Foreign Minister Momen visited the United States in late February. He met with John Kerry on that visit. At the time, Washington expressed interest in working with Dhaka to tackle climate change.

Earlier, John Kerry called Secretary of State on January 27. In that phone call, they discussed in detail how Bangladesh and the United States can work together on the risks of climate change.
